Throat cancer is a serious condition that develops in various parts of the throat, such as the oropharynx (the area around the tonsils and base of the tongue) and the hypopharynx (the lower part of the throat). It occurs when cells grow abnormally and form a tumor. Major risk factors include tobacco (smoking and chewing), alcohol consumption, HPV infection (Human Papillomavirus), poor nutrition, and long-term irritation. This cancer is quite common in India, especially due to tobacco use. Common symptoms of throat cancer can include pain or irritation in the throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, ear pain, weight loss, and a lump in the neck. Sometimes, patients may experience difficulty swallowing or a choking sensation. Early diagnosis is very important. Diagnosis involves tests such as endoscopy, biopsy, CT scan, MRI, and PET scan. These tests help determine the location and stage of the cancer. Treatment depends on the stage and location of the cancer and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. In some cases, a combined treatment approach is used for better outcomes. If throat cancer is detected in the early stages, the success rate of treatment is quite high. Therefore, it is very important to avoid smoking and tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, and not ignore early symptoms.
