Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the front part of the neck (cheek) and produces hormones that control the body's metabolism, heart rate, and temperature. Thyroid cancer typically grows slowly, and in the early stages, there are few or no symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms such as a lump or swelling in the neck, voice changes (heaviness or hoarseness), difficulty swallowing, and occasionally, neck pain may appear. Risk factors include radiation exposure, family history, genetic factors, and certain thyroid disorders. This cancer is more common in women than in men. Diagnosis involves a physical examination, ultrasound, thyroid scan, biopsy (FNAC), and blood tests. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI is also used. Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery (thyroidectomy), radioactive iodine therapy, hormone therapy, and occasionally radiation therapy. The prognosis for thyroid cancer is generally good, especially when detected in the early stages. With regular checkups and timely treatment, this disease can be effectively managed.
